Positional sleep therapy
belt somnipax belt

somnipax belt, the electronic positional therapy belt, is designed and approved for use in cases of positional obstructive sleep apnoea (POSA) and positional simple snoring (tongue-base snoring).
The elastic belt with electronic positioning control is very discreet and scores high in terms of sustainability. Electronic positioning aids are the latest and most advanced form of therapy for snoring and sleep apnoea, and they are therefore popular with many sleep laboratories and ENT practices.

  • Sustainable: a belt which in the long run trains you to modify your sleeping position – moving away from the supine position (on your back) and instead onto your side; the change in behaviour is lasting. The goal is for you to sleep free of snoring and apnoea, even when you’re not wearing a belt.
  • Gentle: very light vibrations signal you are sleeping in the wrong position – and they only stop when you have repositioned yourself. You become accustomed to only ever sleeping in the “right” position.
  • Comfortable: a lightweight belt in breathable material with a small, matchbox-sized control box. A medical device you hardly notice, offering maximum freedom of movement while you sleep.

How does a positional sleep therapy belt work?

Snoring noises and interruptions in breathing at night (‘apnoeas’) both occur when the soft issues in the upper airways relax and slacken during sleep.

For many of us, this relaxation causes the tongue to fall backwards into the throat (when you lie on your back), which narrows or even temporarily closes off the airways. Vibrations and airflow turbulence then occur at this narrowed point. This is what causes the snoring sound. If the airways become completely closed off, interruptions in breathing occur. A positional therapy belt is very effective in preventing the tongue from falling back into the throat.

So, what does it do? The positional therapy belt detects when you are sleeping on your back and triggers a vibrational signal. The signal continues until you have turned back onto your side or front. In most cases, you won’t be consciously aware of the vibration and it won’t wake you up. When you sleep on your side, the tongue muscle does not fall back into the throat but instead falls and rests on the inside of the cheek. As a result your airways remain open. You’re free to sleep without any dangerous interruptions in breathing or unwelcome snoring sounds.
