Mouthguard
somnipax shield

The somnipax shield mouthguard is designed and approved for use with ‘velar’ snoring (vibration of the soft tissue in the soft palate area).

somnipax shield scores highly for being very discreet and exceptionally easy use. For patients who snore with their mouth open regardless of what position they lie in, the mouthguard is a very effective form of sleep therapy.

  • Simple: designed for simplicity and pared down to the essentials. Easy to fit, easy to care for, easy to use.
  • Comfortable: soft and flexible for exceptional comfort. Adapts to your bite pattern and the natural position of your jaw. Designed with minimal material so the tongue and jaw are not restricted and can move around as freely as possible.
  • Healthy: your body becomes accustomed to breathing naturally through your nose, which for humans is healthier.

In terms of its technical properties, this is a mouthpiece/guard combination made from thermoplastic material. It is CE certified and made from biocompatible material.

How does a mouthguard work?

Snoring occurs when the soft tissues in the upper airways relax and slacken during sleep. This may also affect the soft palate tissue (uvula). When you breath through your mouth during sleep, the airflow vibrates the slackened tissue and this results in snoring (known as ‘mouth snoring’). A mouthguard is a very effective way to prevent the soft tissue from vibrating.

How does it do that? The mouthguard stops you breathing through your mouth and gets your body used to breathing through the nose instead – which is natural and healthier for you. The air you breathe in then flows directly into the lungs via the nose and trachea without passing the areas of slackened tissue in the mouth and throat. Your sleep is free from unwelcome snoring.

It’s all about breathing freely through the nose
somnipax shield switches your breathing over from your mouth to your nose. For this to work, you have to be able to breathe freely through your nose. A simple test is useful here: can you breathe comfortably through your nose during normal physical activity (e.g. walking)? If not, then you first need to manage breathing freely through your nose – with the help of a nasal dilator, or by addressing the issue with an ENT doctor. You should only start using somnipax shield once your nose is clear.

100% easy to use ⬤ 98% comfortable ⬤ 80% effective
This sums up the results of a study conducted on the mouthguard by the University of the Witwatersrand. In the study, 100% of the users described the mouthguard as easy to use, and 98% of the users attested to it being very comfortable to wear. 80% of users also stated that the mouthguard completely eliminated or at least successfully reduced their snoring.
